What is the World Rail Market Study?

The study, supported by Bain & Company, analyses 66 countries accounting for 99% of global rail traffic and the entire rail value chain, including infrastructure, rail control, rolling stock, services and turnkey management. Data for countries that are not part of the focus group has been extrapolated based on passenger kilometres, tonne-kilometres and transport units for light rail and metro.

What can you expect in this edition of the World Rail Market Study?

The rail transport market has experienced robust growth in recent years and has a positive outlook until the end of the decade. Between 2021-2023 and 2027-2029, the global market is expected to grow by 3.0% annually in real terms. By the end of this period, the average market size is expected to reach EUR 240.8 billion (excluding inflation-related price increases). The forecast is based on over 10,000 future orders for rail projects, including new investments, replacements and modernisation projects. The orders are aggregated and presented at regional and segment level. This and other exclusive, high-quality content can only be found in the World Rail Market Study 2024.

“As the rail sector continues to grow, the UNIFE World Rail Market Study 2024 serves as the leading reference point for the industry to measure its success and capture further opportunities by providing the latest market estimates and growth projections accessible to EU rail suppliers.

The European rail supply industry employs over 650,000 people and if we are to continue to evolve as a sector, and achieve our climate goals, we need strategic autonomy to deliver. It is essential to create a framework that will allow us to maintain leadership in an increasingly challenging environment. For this vision to become a reality, we hope that the priorities of the rail industry will be taken into account and integrated into the new package of EU legislation, including the new EU seven year budget plan from 2028-2034.”
